Skincare | Getting Through Winter

I thought I'd put together and share some cleanser and moisturizer skincare products that I've been using this winter. 15 years ago, I never would of thought I'd be posting a picture of myself without any makeup on the internet. I recall being a teenager who was really insecure and embarrassed showing her barefaced--freckles and blemishes in public. I remember telling myself that once I was able to, I wanted to permanently tattoo makeup on my face. You have no idea how glad I am that I grew out of that. Although my skin is not perfect, I've learned to love it, and I'm not afraid to walk out of the house on my lazy days looking just like this--which is why its so important to take care if it.

My skin is on the drier side and seems to always flare up in the winter where I'd deal with dry patches and redness on varies places of my face and body. In additional, I also have sensitive skin so I always try to be careful on what products I put on my face, which is also the reason why I usually stick to the norm once I've found something that works for me. For cleansing, I use two products. In the morning, I use Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash. This cleanser does a great job cleansing the face to remove oil and dirt all while protecting the dry areas. In the evenings, I use Cetaphil Facial Cleanser (you can find at the drugstore for around $5). This is an affordable facial cleanser that is gentle on the skin, perfect for anyone with sensitive skin, and it definitely does a great job on washing off my makeup, oil and dirt at the end of the day.

I don't always wear eye makeup, but when I do, I use long-lasting and waterproof products, and this requires the use of another product--Johnson's baby head-to-toe wash! It's gentle on the eyes and obviously tear-free and it removes all signs of my hardcore eyeliner and waterproof mascara! Plus, I already have the products in the house (thanks to my babies).

As for moisturizer: In the beginning of the winter before my face starts to get extremely dry, I use Cetaphil moisturizing cream. My whole family uses this product actually! We use it for our face and body, but I'll get to that in a bit. As winter progresses, so does the dryness of my skin. I then move to two Clinique products that I kind of alternate between, the Essence Lotion (part of their Even Better line) and the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. I really like the essence lotion because I can really feel it absorb into my skin and retain the moisture. Think of it like water, when you wet your face and you let that water air dry on your skin, it causes your skin to dry (especially in the winter) once its absorbed or evaporated from your skin. The essence lotion consistency is just like water but you can feel it absorb and lock in the moisture to keep your skin from drying out.

On days where I feel like my skin just cannot fight it and it starts to flake or crack, I use Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask (usually 2x a week) and it definitely does the job! In the morning my skin feels restored and hydrated. If I wanted I could definitely use this every single night.

In 2012 after I had my son, my skin became irritated, dry and itchy. Turns out, I had eczema! Which was surprising to me because I didn't understand how it happened. I don't know if it was something I've always had and never had an outbreak until after the pregnancy or if it was something new that I developed from the pregnancy. However, all I know is that I deal with it now... every freakin' winter. And it doesn't spread to my face (thank God!). After a bath or shower, I lather myself with Cetaphil's moisturizing cream (see above) all over the body. It's thick which is great to apply right out of the shower to seal in any moisture, and it comes in a big tub for the whole family to use. I swear by this product. My son (yes the one that cause me to have these eczema breakouts ha!) he also has mild eczema. We don't always remember to apply lotion or body cream on him so his his legs would start to feel dry and get small dry patches, we apply this overnight and in the morning, his legs are as smooth as his bottom!

I know I mentioned a few different products that I use and love, but overall, I would recommend the Cetaphil skincare line. We've tried a lot (if not all) of their products and swear by them. Everyone in the family can use it and its definitely on the more affordable side of skincare products so that's always plus!
